My Students

Students in the US History Credit Recovery course failed the class during their 11th grade year and have only one chance to pass and graduate on time. This class is designed to help the students who are at risk of not graduating, without lowering the standards of the curriculum.

Students in this class are high school seniors who failed US History during their junior year.

A large portion of them are from economically disadvantaged families. Historically, when students fail a class, they are re-enrolled in the same class, but evidence shows that repeat failure rates are high. This class represents a new program in which instructional modalities can be altered to meet the unique needs of these students and help them to graduate on time with their cohort.

My Project

To receive credit in this class, students must show proficiency in 7 units of study during each semester. One of the strategies is to differentiate instruction and allow students to work at their appropriate pace. To accommodate this method of instruction, lectures and discussions are recorded and distributed to students as podcasts. Students can pause the podcast if they need more time for taking notes, they can listen to the lectures if they are absent or they can use them as review before a test. To enable students to access podcasts, and because many of the economically disadvantaged students don't have iPods, including iPods in the classroom would drastically improve instruction. Lectures and story-telling is a staple of history instruction, but difficult when differentiating. Having iPods allows the stories of history to remain as part of the experience.

The students in the credit recovery class are typically individuals who need alternative methods of instruction to be successful and they do not fit the model used in regular classrooms.

Technology gives students and teachers the opportunity to meet in new and interesting ways. Teens will embrace the use of podcasts, and will appreciate the use of technology. And finally, there is so much history to teach and so little time. iPods will make the class more efficient and productive.
