My Students

My young men need encouragement! They are ambitious and optimistic about their futures, but they face additional challenges.

The young men at my school are all African-American, and they are all on the path to college.

The school serves inner-city, mostly at-risk middle and high school students. They are outstanding kids and they deserve every possible opportunity to succeed.

My Project

"A Black Male Handbook" is a compilation of accessible essays written by African American men and I want every one of the young men in my Life Skills classes to read it. The experiences these writers relate, both negative and positive, serve as a guide for the young men who read them. The book offers practical solutions to problems, as well as answers to tough questions. For any young man who says such things as, "college isn't for me" or "my future as a black man is already written," this book comes back at them with an "If-I-can-do-this-so-can-you" theme.

I want to make college attendance a reality for every one of my students.

Convincing them that they can and will go to college is a challenge, but especially so for the young men. In my experience they are more susceptible than their female counterparts to the negative influences coming at them from every direction. It is critically important that they see and hear as many first-hand accounts of success from adults who have experienced the same things they have.
