This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My elective class in outdoor education incorporates using the school garden to grow and nurture plantings for our school campus. With multiple sets of tools students can have ownership of tools and space to create plantings that can be shown off around campus while learning planting techniques.

We are an inner city school of low income students who for the most part are housed in large apartment complexes with very little green space or opportunity to learn and experience the beauty of germinating, growing, and even harvesting crops from plants that they have grown.

They are highly motivated and soak up the learning that has so far taken place in our outdoor garden. They have suggested that more tools would allow the program to expand and permit them to showcase their learning throughout the campus and provide a lasting witness of their experiences.

My Project

Tools of the garden tend to be consumable and are prone to wear and tear especially by middle school students who are just learning. We are seeking to supplement our equipment shed to give more students in smaller groups an opportunity to have hands on experiences raising and nurturing seedlings, cuttings, and plantings of flowers, vegetables and plants that will enhance and improve and increase the green space of our campus.

When students create the product there is more pride in it and therefore there should be more respect, care, and maintenance of the plantings and also the campus as a result of their personal investment in its development.

Pride of ownership instilled at a young age will stay with the students as they move forward in life and our goal at the school is to help make students responsible, caring, and knowledgeable citizens.
