My Students

Help me show my students how visual art can be created using technology.

I teach art at three elementary schools in a small South Carolina town.

Most of my students come from highly impoverished, single-parent homes. Regular classroom teachers all received interactive Promethean boards, new computers, and document cameras using Title One funding. Unfortunately, I, the visual arts teacher, did not receive one.

My Project

In an age, where most elementary students are more technologically advanced than adults, technology must be used to capture the attention of students. The Nintendo DSi offers three games that focus on visual art creation and careers. Imagine Artist allows students to become a world famous artist! They learn to draw, paint, and create collages digitally through lessons. They can manage their budding career as you fulfill client commissions, attend events, and share their designs by uploading them to the Imagine Online Gallery where they can enter contests! Art Academy is a portable art course that anyone can join, or experience the trial and error on canvas. Art Academy: First Semester will guide you through the basics of using pencil and paints. Style Lab Jewelry Design allows students to design jewelry, and upload it. For behavior rewards, students can order their creations to wear.

Many new careers in art use complex technology: web design, computer and video animation, and, even architects.

My students come from homes that cannot afford to purchase computers or video game systems. I want them to experience how an artist uses technology in careers. Art is not just tradition drawing and painting. Technology has opened up a whole new field of visual arts careers. With this system and these games, students can use technology as an artist first hand.
