My Students

It's my turn now!... That's the sound that I hope to be hearing more of in my pre-kindergarten classroom. I have 18 three and four year old children who are learning to work together. They love to come to school, as it is a retreat from the large city in which we live in.

My students are eager to learn whatever will come their way.

During our math time recently I have been incorporating small group time. Some students will be rolling a dice and counting the dots. I have other students working in groups of four playing Chutes and Ladders and Candy Land. The students have been inspiring, hearing how they are learning to take turns. They are gaining number recognition skills. They learn how to complete something, seeing a game from the beginning to the end. And they learn a great life lesson, not everyone wins and that's OK.

My Project

In seeing how receptive my students have been to the board games, I would like to offer them more opportunities to play other games. I am requesting 11 different early development skill games for our classroom to use during center time. The games will have the students practice their number skills, colors and patterns. I have a vision of having parents volunteer and come in to work with our classroom as they monitor the students using the games. It's hard for me to believe that board games are being used in the homes of the students I teach. I would hope that the parents would be inspired to play board games at their house, as they see how much fun their child is having. It takes a few practice spins before a child gets use to flicking the spinner, or keeping the dice on the table. The main goal I have for these students is to be talking to their peers, routing each other on and taking turns. With more board games in the classroom, it would give us more opportunities to play.

I really hope that you share my vision for the students.
