My students need 10 updated elementary dictionaries. The ones they are currently using are high school dictionaries from 1987.

My Students

Enrich the vocabulary of my students! I love to have my students do scavenger hunts in the dictionary. However, with dictionaries that are outdated and have words that are so small it is hard to read, I find the students become frustrated rather than having fun learning new vocabulary.

My classroom is the special education classroom, where is it is primarily learning disabled students.

My students range from Kindergarten to sixth grade, but are primarily 3-6 graders. All of my students struggle with reading and are performing below grade level. My classroom is considered a "pull-out" classroom, where students come to me for anywhere between 30 minutes to 2 hours. We are a public K-6 school in a rural community. Most my students are low income students and are on free and reduced lunches.

My Project

With updated elementary dictionaries my students will be able to access them whenever they need them. If they are unsure of a word in a book they are reading, I encourage them to get a dictionary and look the word up. I love to do word scavenger hunts in the dictionary. With the elementary dictionary the students will have words that are developmentally appropriate for their grades. The dictionaries have expanded usage examples with quotes from children's literature, colorful illustrations, photographs, and diagrams.

Literacy is very important for every student to learn.

Vocabulary is a major component of literacy, by providing my students with the opportunity to have access to a current updated dictionary will motivate them to use the dictionaries more. This in turn will help increase their vocabulary skills.
