Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember putting a lot of work and effort in something you want to showcase? My students created PowerPoints and want to show them to their teachers and classmates.

I am a library media specialist in an urban school district in Connecticut.

The district serves a high-need urban area where the majority of students come from low-income families and are at-risk of educational failure. Our library media center needs a new digital LCD projector. The district has been unable to focus school funding on providing sufficient technology in the libraries. If awarded, this grant will serve 750 students in grades K-8.

My Project

Students love to learn with the help of technology. It makes learning fun because of the hands-on approach. Our middle school students use a projector to presents their PowerPoints. These PowerPoints are the result of collaboration between the academic subject teachers and the library media center teacher. The students research their topic and present it before their peers. Often, as library media specialist, I also use United Streaming video clips to enhance the subjects the students study in their classrooms. And last but not least, to teach information literacy skills I rely heavily on lessons presented on an electronic white board where I need the use of a digital projector. The library media center enhances the learning experiences, mentioned above, by providing resource sharing access to the library, but to do so we need a new digital projector.

Based on a growing body of research supporting the connection between quality library media centers and student academic achievement (e.g.

Lance and Wellborn 1993), increased use of the library media center will support information literacy skills for critical thinking that will increase student reading performance.
