This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine yourself as a second grader wanting to share a special treasure you found on your first ever vacation!! Everyone cannot possibly see its beauty from where they sit on the share rug. Your chance has passed. That is the reason I want to obtain a document camera for my class.

My second graders are from a rural school in North Carolina.

The school population is 51% reduced and free lunch. There are 33% Hispanic students and 14% other minority in the total makeup of the school. Many students do not have English spoken in their homes. Their only link with spoken English is at school. Four of my students have learning problems that are linked to language issues, two have speech issues, and another is placed in a self-contained class for students with severe behavioral problems.

My Project

A document camera would enable the students to share their materials, ideas, and creations in living color on the SMART board. Students could share the drawings they do to illustrate the stories they have written during Writer's Workshop. They could share their written work during "MATH TALK" time as they explain their thinking on how to solve certain problems. Students could use it to enlarge objects they bring from home for SHOW AND TELL so that all students could actually see the object as it is being shared. As a teacher I could use it to enlarge living creatures, such as mealworms or butterflies,and other curriculum related materials that otherwise could not be magnified for student viewing. Students would learn so much more from this visual avenue. Making the learning material SMART board size would enable them all to be exposed to the minute details of the object begin shared or taught about.

Making learning meaningful for all students is what I as an educator strive to do.

Having this document camera available for that teachable moment when a student is sharing a prized treasure, or explaining his/her thinking in a math problem, or for use to enlarge an instructional material would all be possible. The document camera would make it possible for learning to be more visual for all students!
