My Students

We want to be included not just by the school, but by our peers.

I teach a special education classroom.

The students in my classroom are in grades K-5. Our school is an advocate for children with special education services. One of the difficulties for the children I teach is learning appropriate social skills. The social skills associated with going to school and fitting in with their peers are hard to learn for many students. The students I work with need direct instruction on how to interact appropriately in their environment.

My Project

Video modeling is one of the most exciting ways to teach social skills. The studies and research on video modeling are exploding. The objective is to video a student doing a targeted social skills correctly, such as returning a greeting from a friend in the hallway. Then we are able to download that video and watch it multiple times. What is nice about videoing is that even if we need to set up the scenario to get the video of the correct actions, we can edit the video so all the student sees is himself/herself doing the skill correctly without help. When a student sees himself/herself doing the correct skill multiple times independently, studies show that the student's ability to perform the skill independently increases. Learning these skills is going to increase the interactions with peers, along with giving peers a way to help the special education students in the class.

We want to be included not just by the school, but by our peers.

This camcorder will open the door to new ways to help students be included by peers. The world is not special ed. This is a way to help my students to fit into the world around them.
