My Students

Help us be successful; help us GRADUATE! One major problem is that many alternative school students are dropping out of school before meeting the requirements to graduate. Many of these students drop out due to the stress and financial burdens of the graduation project.

This is an alternative school in Western North Carolina with a transient population of approximately 100 students who are sent from 2 local high schools and 3 local middle schools.

These students are among the poorest children in the county with 95% participating in the free and reduced lunch program. For the most part, these students are sent to the alternative school for behavior problems, attendance issues, and academic difficulties. Some students choose to attend the alternative school for the smaller class environment. Many of these students, regardless of the reason for their alternative placement, are expected to drop out. The alternative school teachers' goal is to help these students complete their education despite the numerous obstacles these children face. These students can succeed if given the proper encouragement and adequate tools. Against all odds, approximately 60 alternative students each year complete the graduation project and reach graduation.

My Project

The graduation project is comprised of 4 components: First, students must complete 15 mentor hours and write an 8-12 page research paper to explore potential careers, discover community services, or to investigate hobbies. Secondly, students must create a product related to the mentor hours and paper. Thirdly, students must submit a reflective portfolio that includes a letter to the judges, resume, interview questions and answers, and signed documents as proof of their work; and lastly, students must present the paper, product, and portfolio to a panel of judges from the community. The requested flash drives allow students to save their progress. They may work on the project with mentors, teachers, and parents at multiple locations. Flash drives will also help the school save money by reducing paper and toner; students may submit the flash for grading preceding final project. The binders and page protectors will allow students to submit a professional quality project to reflect their hard work.

When Vince Lombardi was told by one of his football players that, “Nobody’s Perfect,” he replied, “By chasing perfection, you catch excellence.” The pursuit of excellence is measured one child at a time – each one has their own sets of abilities, goals, and desires.

These students have previously been expected to be failures, many have met those expectations. This donation will demonstrate for these alternative students that expectations are high; this donation will help them pursue excellence!
