My Students

Imagine trying to prepare students for the real world with only books to use in a multimedia society. Most of my students are at poverty level & this infocus projector would allow students to use PowerPoint presentations and video clips rather than books and worksheets to practice with all the time.

My students attend a rural public school in Tennessee.

We are a Title I school, which means that the majority of my students receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch due to his or her family's low income. Although most of my students can be motivated to learn when enticed with methods they can relate to such as interactive learning games or a presentation with visual aides, some days I feel like the star of my own news/sitcom show in order to keep the attention of my class. Despite the merit of books and worksheets, they are not exactly a thrilling prospect on a rainy Monday morning or any other day. Since about 70% of my students are visual learners and need to see examples in order to process and remember important information, the projector would be an exceptional learning tool for them.

My Project

Would you rather hear someone lecture while you take notes about Shakespeare's life or see a five-minute video clip showing a model of the Globe Theater with the actors in costumes dueling? My students would much rather see a video clip and discuss it than hear a lecture and answer questions about it on a handout. Furthermore, they are more likely to remember it for the graduation exam. The projector would allow my classes to see rather than simply hear about the previous societies and countries that they explore through literature. The projector would also help grammar be fun rather than dull. I have created PowerPoint games of Jeopardy, Who Wants to Be A Millionaire, and baseball that they find much more fun than their grammar book. Many of my students have never left the state, so the projector would allow me to show them a wider view of the world while providing them with tools they are likely to encounter in college or a future workplace.

Our school is in county that has made the AP news for high unemployment rates.

We are currently unable to provide speech classes for our students because all available teachers must provide extra tutoring during their planning times just to get all of our students through core classes. Our English department tries to compensate for the lack of speech classes by having students give oral presentations during class. The projector would allow them to use tools that are available at other schools.
