My Students

Imagine trying your very best to read a sentence. Then imagine yourself trying to read a paragraph. Finally, imagine yourself reading a novel. This is the exact process my students transition through each year. The only problem is, my classroom is lacking chapter books.

I am a 2nd grade teacher in a low income school located in New York.

The majority of them speak another language at home and only really get a chance to practice English at school. They are eager learners and motivated to read. This is the time when most of my students are transitioning into chapter books. I want to make sure they all reach their fullest potential and possess the skills they need in reading heavy chapter books by the end of the year.

My Project

I would like to obtain chapter books to enrich my students experiences with literature. I am specifically seeking series that will allow them to follow characters through journeys. These chapter books will provide my higher achieving students with a stimulating reading experience and my struggling readers with a goal in mind. I want all of my students to be able to personalize their experiences with chapter books by forming book clubs. My students will learn that reading is also about having meaningful discussions. I plan to teach my students different strategies in thinking about what they are reading and how to hold onto meaning. I also plan to allow my students to borrow these chapter books to continue practicing their reading at home. These books will particularly teach them about character traits, how characters change throughout their series and how we can relate ourselves to our characters. They will learn how to write, speak and read high level text in their book clubs.

Please donate these books to my class to help give my students the motivation and encouragement they need to succeed in reading.

These series will open up a window of discussion and promote healthy reading habits throughout their lives. My students love to read and can only get better by hooking them with books of interest. The power of a chapter book can boost a child's self esteem while pushing them above their limits.
