My Students

"Wow! Look at that bird." "Who made these tracks?" Students grow up in many types of areas, but birds and small mammals are likely to be found wherever they go. Students need to know about them in order to help protect them and be able to enjoy the world around them.

The 5th graders at our school started a butterfly garden 10 years ago in order to learn more about butterflies.

Since that time we have expanded the garden to include plants that attract hummingbirds and songbirds. We see the animals in our garden as well as the evidence they have been there. Students are curious to learn about all the animals living there. We have materials to teach about the butterflies and caterpillars and many of the insects, however our school is lacking in materials about the songbirds and other small mammals commonly found in many habitats. Students enjoy putting seeds out and watching to see what birds come to eat. Students also notice that other animals, like squirrels, frogs, snakes, and rabbits are visiting as well. With the materials requested here, we would be able to help students learn to identify the birds and other animals found in our garden and many other habitats.

My Project

The posters and field guide books would allow students to see what the birds look like, and read descriptions of their behaviors and habitats so they can go outside and identify them. We can use the molds, models, and stamps to help us identify the evidence they leave behind and become good observers and detectives! By installing the Hawk Eye Nature Cam we will be able to watch the life cycle of birds that nest in our garden birdhouse. The games will help review and test students' knowledge. The soil testing kit will allow us to select plants that will grow best and improve the habitat. We have also asked for a couple of items that will help us learn about other commonly found animals. By learning how to care for the birds and other small mammals, students will grow up with a better understanding of the world around them, wherever they might be in the future.

The combination of these materials will make for a very meaningful experience the students can use throughout their lives.

They will know how to attract and care for birds and other wildlife when they grow up and make decisions about our environment. The animals they will learn about are found in many types of habitats. These are animals students will encounter whether they choose to live on a farm, or in a big city!
