My Students

Students are excited when they perform on stage. Success is very important as they "show off". To help this success, balanced sound is crucial.

I teach music in a K-6 public school of 485 students in a town of about 13000, rural yet near a metropolitan city in Missouri.

The vast majority of the students are Caucasian, with approximately 1% of the population East Asian, Black, or Hispanic. Because of the economy, 30% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunches. Because of subgroup test scores, my building did not meet Annual Yearly Progress as outlined in No Child Left Behind. Every grade puts on a major evening performance each school year. These performances are held at the local high school theater. The students love these performances, and an average of 95% the students attend. At this high school, the sound equipment is at the back of the theater. The speakers are hung from the top of the stage. However, they are aimed more towards the audience, and sound piped in through the speakers does not come through to the performers on the stage.

My Project

During the performances, I often use CD accompaniments. As mentioned earlier, the speakers are aimed more towards the audience, and it is often difficult to hear any sounds coming through the sound system, especially as my students are performing. If the CD volume is turned up, the accompanying music is too loud for the audience and throws off the balance between the CD and the singers. If the CD balance is suitable for the audience, the students on the stage cannot hear it. As a result, students will often not sing with as much confidence because they cannot hear the accompaniment. It is also more difficult the students to sing together in a uniform tempo, even with me conducting. This is especially true of the younger students, who rely more on what they hear than what they see. With two feedback monitors, I have an additional source through which the music can be amplified. The monitors will be set on either end of the risers, angled towards the students.

Your donations towards this project will go a long way towards successful programs for my students.

Once a program is over, we watch the videotape and analyze the performances. The students note when they cannot be heard and when they are not singing together, which frustrates many of them. Some will comment about not being able to hear the accompaniment during the performance. With the monitors, the students will have tools that will help alleviate that frustration.
