Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have always been told that to be successful in life they must do well in high school and college. Now as they prepare for college they are learning the grim reality of the costs of the college. I need to help them get scholarships to make their dreams a reality.

My students are inner-city kids who have overcome obstacles to get to where they are today.

Our school has an 80% poverty level and many of our kids live in the projects and go home to empty apartments as their parents are at work. Many students are new to the country and although their parents want them to succeed, they are not able to (due to language barrier and time constraints) help prepare them for college. Our school is a technology school and tech is woven into all content area curricula. Our students take tech classes every year and college readiness and career awareness are embedded into these classes. All staff members work hard to push our students to succeed academically "to become productive and responsible citizens of our local and global community".

My Project

With a new laptop, I can work with students one-on-one to research scholarship information electronically. We have some resource books that were granted to us through Donors Choose that students use to do preliminary scholarship research. Once they have identified scholarships for which they may be eligible, students need to explore the funder's website to get further details and to draft an application. I will work with them to conduct this research and to identify those scholarships for which they are most eligible. Once we do the work together, students will then be able to conduct scholarship research independently both in school and at home. They will also turnkey this training to their peers and their younger siblings so the benefits will multiply exponentially. In addition, I always ask my students to give back and most of our graduates do come back to help to prepare seniors for college. This laptop may make the difference between going to college or not for my students.

One small step for a donor, one giant step for my students.

Your donation will essentially change the lives of my students by making their dream of going to college a reality. Being able to research college scholarships will result in students being able to attend schools that they otherwise would be unable to afford. This will change their lives and the lives of their peers, siblings and future classes tremendously. Please help me to help them.
