Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

'The mind is a great slumbering giant until awakened by the desire to do.'--anonymous. Although my students may not know it yet, they can become enamored with reading for pleasure. They could use this love for books & reading to extend what they know from thier own experiences to the world at large.

We are a small public school in a major urban center in the Midwest.

My students come from diverse neighborhoods and far-reaching corners of the city. My students are 40% African American, 40% Hispanic, 15% Caucasian, and 5% Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American or other. 76% of my students receive free or reduced lunch. My students enjoy comparing their lives with one another and like to talk about the experiences that each of them share as individuals from diverse backgrounds in the stream of urban life. Many of my students need to engage in reading outside of the classroom in order to grow as readers and students and more than a few do not read or speak English at home.

My Project

I am requesting a library of graphic novels. Some of the topics of the novels are pure fantasy, some are non-fiction, and many are classics like Shakespeare's Hamlet and Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles. Because we are a small start-up school, we do not have a library and so my students are presently unable to browse a shelf of young adult literature and choose something exciting and pleasurable to read. The graphic novels engage my students on many levels in reading difficult texts with their bold use of color, graphics, and layouts. Access to these novels would provide me the means to persuade my students to choose to read texts that would otherwise not appeal to them in the traditional novel or play form. These graphic novels will inspire my students who read below grade level to choose reading a challenging text over another activity.

It is critical that my students develop a love of reading because it has been proved that higher achievement on test scores that matter to college admissions offices like ACT and SAT are linked to students reading often and on a variety of topics for pleasure.
