My students need new ways to practice their writing that involve more than sitting at a desk writing with pencil and paper such as personal white boards, markers, and erasers.

My Students

How exciting does sitting at a desk doing worksheets for seven hours sound? Not so great, huh? Well, six year olds don't like it either.

I have an amazing group of kids.

Everyone of them is different. I've got one who wants to be the teacher because he reads on a fourth grade level. And I've got another who suffers from a speech impediment and a severe learning disability. The vast majority of my class consists of girls. So you can imagine the cheering, dancing and gossiping that goes on in our room. Needless to say, everyday is eventful and very entertaining! My students are eager learners and truly love engaging themselves in every activity. However, the best response is usually to those activities that get them out of their seats and moving. I try to plan games and activities that will help them learn in a fun, nontraditional way. However, we have a brand new school that is beautiful but still very empty. Our resources are limited and do not always have the materials to get creative.

My Project

The items I'd like my students to have include a class set of wipe-off boards, markers, erasers and clipboards. The purpose of these things is to give them the opportunity to practice everyday skills in a way that doesn't involve a desk, a pencil and paper. The wipe-off boards that I have requested are double-sided. The blank side can be used for practically anything. One great way to use them in math is to allow each student to write out equations and answers on their own board. The other side, which has dotted lines, can be used to practice handwriting or spelling words. The great thing about having a class set is that we can play games involving everyone, or we can use them in small groups, too. The clipboards will also be incredibly helpful. By each student having one, we'll be able to travel the room, or even the campus, making observations and writing information for all sorts of projects. They'll give the students the ability to work and move and learn at the same time.

Funding this project will create a whole new way of learning for my kids.

It will take them away from the old desk and chair routine and will give them the opportunity practice their skills while having a good time. And the best part is that the items requested will not only help my current class, they will help classes for years to come.
