What's So Special About DDW, Anyway?

My students need a water distiller for laboratory activities in Biology, Chemistry, and Earth Science classes.

This project expired on September 6, 2010.

My Students

Our students are more engaged when constructing new knowledge in small, cooperative groups. They work together to plan and conduct experiments, analyze results, and evaluate conclusions. Guided inquiry labs are resource intensive, particularly for deionized, distilled water (DDW).

Our students attend an Early College with a health sciences focus located in an urban setting.

The science curriculum consists of Earth Science in 9th grade and Biology and Chemistry in 10th. Students gain their remaining required science credits in college classes. Consequently, it is important that they develop the necessary critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills by the end of 10th grade.

My Project

Deionized, distilled water (DDW) is a staple of laboratory sciences. It is central to preparing chemical solutions and biological samples and cleaning glassware. A reliable, convenient, and cost effective method for producing DDW will allow teachers to let students cooperatively develop laboratory procedures in a guided inquiry approach, rather than following cookbook procedures to minimize use of DDW. Students can use DDW as needed to test alternative hypotheses, develop their own methods, and repeat procedures when mistakes are made. We currently have to carefully monitor our use of DDW to ensure that our supplies are not exhausted in the middle of activities. We also only rinse with DDW the glassware that would be the most negatively affected by contamination.

Our science instruction uses the constructivist model of learning and process-oriented guided inquiry learning.

Laboratory activities are a central focus of this approach. Having our own supply of DDW will allow us to maintain our emphasis on students constructing their own knowledge. Currently, we have to make arrangements to obtain DDW from contacts at the local University and spend valuable time and energy transporting large containers from those sources to our school.
