My Students

This apple computer will help close the gap between our students and other schools which have access to the newest electronics. It is always a goal for good teachers to provide a learning environment in which the students can get hands-on experience.

Our students are at-risk (of failure) teens.

Half of them qualify as special education. The learning disorders are many, and they have genuinely had an extremely rough life. They are all wards of the court system and are living in foster homes or day and residential treatment programs. These awesome kiddos feel the love and respect we offer and are often sad when leaving our school (that’s if they don’t run away first).

My Project

Everyday we have sustained silent reading for 20 minutes. One lucky student (at a time) will be able to read a chapter book on this Apple computer. This will not only create interest by making reading new and fun, it will also allow the teacher to choose the appropriate book to fit the student’s needs. We will also download the three iWork programs (pages, numbers, and keynote). With Keynote, students will be able to create beautiful “PowerPoint-type” presentations and be able to connect and show them on the classroom’s big screen. Numbers is an easy-to-use “Excel-type” program that will help make beautiful graphs and charts for the demands of the math class. Pages is a word processing application that outperforms “Word and Publisher” and will be used everyday for their typing needs. The list goes on endlessly for innovative ways to interact with core content. We can upload many educational games, math drills, driver’s ed, language tutors, graphing calculator, and brushes for art.

Imagine the inspiration and motivation that being part of the newest technology can bring to a students who have never had the opportunity to experience the latest and greatest.

It can also be loaded with cool games as a stand-alone incentive for students to learn well and earn some free-time. As one student recently said, “If kids are having fun, it will encourage them to learn.” This computer will assist with many students' special education needs.
