How would you survive in the wild? My students want to test their independence and self-reliance every day in the classroom. They need to experience a thrilling tale of wildlife and the human experience such as Hatchet by Gary Paulson.

My students are brilliant young men; their bright eyes yearn for adventure.

They attend an all African American middle school for young men in New Orleans East. They are 11-12 years old, but many wish to experience a challenge which defines them as men.

My Project

Adolescents crave self-exploration; they long to define themselves as independent men, as well as find their place in the group dynamic. Brian's one of a kind escapade through the wilderness seems to be a perfect fit for our next book. Although many of my students enjoy guided reading in the classroom, they take pride in owning their own copy of a book. Sadly, many of my students have only one book in their own library, The Jungle Book purchased by another DonorsChoose member. We are excited to juxtapose Mowgli's fictional tale to the realistic challenges Brian faces in Hatchet.

This donation will make a difference to my students because they will experience the one of a kind feeling of writing your name on the inside cover of a book.

They will learn to reflect on their challenges in their own lives and compare their decision making skills to Brian's in Hatchet. The students will become even more results driven and solution oriented as we focus on Brian's voyage to self-discovery and (eventually) self-reliance.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
