Igniting my students' imaginations begins with frequently updated reading materials. Student-centered periodicals engage their curiosity and enhance hands-on learning. Also students love receiving mail that's theirs to keep and share. Student magazines build a reading community.
My children live in a community frequently shattered by gunfire and sirens.
They attend a low-wealth school. Resources are nonexistent. Ours is a diverse school, home to African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Multiracial students. The surrounding community consists of mill houses built in the early 1900s. Few of my students live with both parents; most live with a grandparent. In many cases, their mothers have abandoned them, preferring crack or methamphetamine. Their fathers have just disappeared. Their emotional needs often outweigh their academic needs, but both are dire. My desire is to build a reading community that captures their imagination and expands their world view. For these children, it is especially important they have something to call their own. Monthly and weekly magazines also give them something to anticipate without fear that it will let them down.
My Project
My children live in a impoverished community. They know the gang colors and signs. They recognize crack and discarded needles. They know where to sell beer cans for a few extra dollars. Yet, these children cheerfully collect pennies to help disaster victims. They are starving for intellectual stimulation. Monthly magazines will provide them constantly changing topics to explore and investigate. Our class can use these resources in lieu of science and social studies texts that we lack. Equally important, these magazines and resources will be theirs to keep. For a child with nothing, that means everything. As we explore the world through Weekly Reader and Time for Kids, our world view will expand tremendously. These resources will enable us to travel virtually anywhere. My children tend to travel only as far as the school bus carries them. Help me expand their awareness and expose them to a world beyond their trailer park driveways. They deserve to dream, but dreamers must be inspired
My children deserve knowing someone cares about them and their education.
These donations will demonstrate that love comes in many forms. This gift will enable my children to read about social and historical events, view images, engage in meaningful discussions, form opinions, share thoughts, and address real world issues. For most, it will be the first time they have been exposed to a topic or idea. The impact of a weekly gift to brighten their world exceeds my imagination.
