My children live in a community frequently shattered by gunfire and sirens. They attend a low-wealth school. Resources are nonexistent. Ours is a diverse school, home to African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Multiracial students. The surrounding community consists of mill houses built in the early 1900s. Few of my students live with both parents; most live with a grandparent. In many cases, their mothers have abandoned them, preferring crack or methamphetamine. Their fathers have just disappeared. Their emotional needs often outweigh their academic needs, but both are dire. My desire is to build a reading community that captures their imagination and expands their world view. For these children, it is especially important they have something to call their own. Monthly and weekly magazines also give them something to anticipate without fear that it will let them down.
