My Students

The 7 and 8 year olds that enter my classroom each morning are future teachers, doctors, astronauts, the first female presidents, and above all- avid readers and writers who are learning to use language to express their knowledge, ideas, and to communicate effectively.

I am the proud teacher of 27 second grade scholars at a high-poverty Colorado public school.

My students are absolutely incredible- they come to school ready to learn each day, do their best, and have enormous ambitions. They are imaginative, creative critical-thinkers. Despite their excitement for learning, my scholars face some major challenges. 94% of our students live below the poverty line, and out of 27 students in my classroom, 21 are learning English as a second language.

My Project

I teach writing each morning in a workshop format. After gathering on the carpet to model and guide students through effective writing skills and techniques, my students venture back to their work spaces and write on their own. We often work for weeks at a time planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing our pieces. The publishing stage is so critical because it helps students understand that even in 2nd grade they are REAL authors and their unique writing is worth celebrating! Currently, we have newspaper-thin lined paper and construction paper to staple into books. These books get torn easily, lost, and disappear deep into backpacks and under beds. We need proper publishing materials in order to truly treasure our finished pieces! With primary composition notebooks, card stock, book binding, cover sheets, and colored pencils, we can create beautiful, durable books that will be treasured by students and their families for years to come.

I plan to keep a tub of students' finished books in our classroom library for their classmates to read so they can learn from their peers' writing.

I also plan to put some of the published books on display in our school library. At the end of each school year, students will be able to take the books home and read them over and over again and share their literacy achievements with their parents and siblings. These publishing materials would make such an important impact on my aspiring authors!
