My Students

85% of my 10th grade students are four grade levels below in their reading skills. That said, we still need to prepare for state exams. Power points and visual representations of the material are crucial in helping to connect with material. Please help my students creatively prepare for these exams.

My students are amazing and they have incredible stories to tell.

I feel it is my duty to provide them with the opportunity to do this so they realize they have a voice. I am lucky to be a part of a network of schools that is project based; we believe that students learn best when they are engaged in their interests and passions, and passionate they are!

My Project

When you work with struggling readers you need to teach material very differently. I have to be very creative in order to help the students recognize that although they are still learning reading skills, they can still access material. With a new netbook, my students will learn main points about US History through power points that I create and then retell what they have learned by creating their own movies, image collages and power points that they will share with the rest of the school community. I have learned that when students are actively engaged in their assignments (many times by acting and creating their own lessons) they are more likely to retain more information as well as take ownership over their work. Taking ownership and active engagement lead to real learning.

My students have many amazing ideas but having the resources to create projects is a problem we always face.

This netbook will be a class computer that we will use for this project and many other projects in the future. I will always need to be more creative when teaching my students. Using technology allows me to teach material visually which is crucial in helping struggling readers to understand ideas more clearly.
