Books, Books, Who Wants a Book?

My students need 22 sets of books for beginning readers.

My Students

How do you compete with video games?? We need books that interest the student.

I teach on a military base in Texas where the students are military dependents.

At any given time, 50% of the students have a parent serving in a hostile environment. I teach 2nd grade in a Title One school where 80% of the students are on free or reduced lunch. My students move frequently, so they often miss out on becoming a true reader.

My Project

My students love comic books and I want to be able to bring them into my classroom to help my struggling readers become more proficient. These books teach the basics of phonics by using the characters to teach how important phonics is in reading. These books will help me instill a love for reading in the ones who need it the most, those who struggle with the very basics and often give up on reading.

These books will truly help me reach those who don't like to read.

I want to reach my really low readers by getting them interested in books and showing them that reading can be fun.
