My Students

Yes, they can! What if all your life you were told you couldn't do something? What if you were always told "no"? Help my students achieve their goals and dream big!

I teach 3rd graders in an inner city charter school in Indiana.

Many of my students come from dysfunctional homes with little support from their families. My students are thirsty for acceptance and positive reinforcement and I want my classroom to give them what they need. They need an extra boost of motivation and a healthy dose of "Yes you can!"

My Project

My students need motivators such as reward pencils, wristbands, stickers, notepads, etc. I will be planning and implementing a classroom economy with my third graders this fall. The students will be "paid" for doing their classroom jobs, turning in homework on a regular basis, going above and beyond in their behavior and having good character. They will also be "fined" for not doing their jobs, getting in trouble, having a messy desk, etc. They will be responsible for keeping track of their money and at the end of a pay period, or two weeks, they will get to spend their money. They can choose to buy non-tangible things like a positive phone call or note home, getting to sit at my desk or spending the afternoon in another classroom. They can also choose to buy tangible things, which is why I am writing this grant. I need help purchasing things the students will want to buy with their money and get my classroom store started!

Again, many of my students come from situations where they're told what they can't do all the time.

I want my students to see that they can do anything they put their minds to. Although this may just be a small step in that direction, I believe it will help my students see immediate positive results which will in turn begin fostering an intrinsic motivation. This classroom economy will also teach them how to manage their money, how to be responsible, etc.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
