Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you know what it's like to read a book and not understand what you are reading due to lack of vocabulary knowledge? This challenge faces my english language learners on a daily basis.

My english language learners are a special group of students struggling to understand and master the english language.

English is not their first language. Ninety-nine percent of the english as a second language students are of Hispanic decent. In our school, we have self contained classrooms for our english language learners. They are learning with their peers which helps reduce the alienation some may feel due to lack of knowledge of the english language. Many of them come from low income homes and have many challenges facing their daily lives. Some have fled war torn countries in search of a better life. Most of my students receive free breakfast and lunch due to poverty. We have made their classrooms more comfortable which is conducive to learning, yet we still need the supplies to reinforce what they are learning.

My Project

The students you will be helping are poor and can not afford to buy books for themselves. These kids need dictionaries to aid in their educational development. My students have difficulty understanding a reading assignment since there are many foreign words. If each child has their own dictionary this will them help master their vocabulary and research any words they don't understand. They will be able to take it home with them and use it as an aid with homework. The world of words is enlightening but when you don't understand words it becomes a very dark world.

Dictionaries break the communication barriers my students experience.

They are lost alot of the time. They are learning a new language and they need the proper tools in order to accomplish this task. They will use their dictionaries on a daily basis looking up words they do not understand. Once they look up the words they will transpose them to their own handwritten reference book for future use. Not only will these dictionaries help with understanding, they will encourage communication.
