My Students

Can you recall a time when you couldn't read and you were just ready to give up? My students haven't discovered the magic of reading!

My class consists of 19 English Language Learners and seven resource students in a very poor area of NY.

Most of their learning disabilities are in the English Language Arts area, since English is their second language. These kids are just like any other kids, because they too want to learn, except that they have extra obstacles.

My Project

I am trying to make learning fun and almost trick students into finding the joy of reading. During reading center time, I want students to be able to use the listening center to hear and follow along to their favorite stories. Right now, I have a listening center but nothing to listen to. For some students, this will be an excellent time for them to practice their fluency and phonics skills as well, with center games. Since they will be doing this independently, they will be even more empowered and feel a sense of accomplishment on their own.

Whenever students feel the strength and power of being able to read, I know that I have accomplished my goal.

The idea is to help them read well independently, so that they are never frustrated. The last thing we all want is for our next generation to give up on reading or any other goals.
