My Students

"Ms. there aren't any books for me here!" This is what my students say as they sit in front of the over 500 books in our classroom library.

I teach at a Title I school in a large urban area.

I work with the beginning ESL students who have been here for less than a year. They all come from hard working, economically disadvantaged homes. However, they are all very motivated to learn English and they move up quickly, often going into the honors classes within a couple of years.

My Project

Unfortunately, my classroom library is very disorganized. Since my students require lower level English books, the books are very thin and keeping them with the spine facing out, just isn't working. Titles can't be seen, they get placed back in the wrong way, or they are smooshed by other books. We need bins that can be labeled by reading level so the students know exactly where to go for books at their reading level. They will also be able to flip through the bins without having to remove books to decide whether they want to read it. Once they do take out a book, they will know exactly where to put it back based on the reading level.

My students are having a hard time finding books that they can read in a foreign language.

My students make quick progress in learning the language and they need an organized library that can keep up with them as they move up through reading levels.
