This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What legacies did the ancient Greek civilizations leave behind? What contributions did they make to literature, art, government, philosophy, and sports? Many of my students have read about many Greek myths, but they have yet to discover how much of an impact this civilization has made to our lives.

My 6th grade middle school students attend a school that is currently under program improvement.

About 75% of them qualify for free/reduced lunch. They are eager, enthusiastic learners and are excited about learning history in their class. I am both their Language Arts & Social Studies teacher so I spend a lot of time bridging their understanding of concepts across the two disciplines. Since California is facing a very difficult budget crisis, it has been very difficult to obtain the supplies that I've needed. In previous years past, I have been able to receive these items with a $100 school voucher, but that has been eliminated. They have worked hard all year in both classes, learning in Language Arts the Greek mythical heroes and stories. This would be a great opportunity for them to bridge and fully develop their understanding of Ancient Greece by working on the Ancient Greece project. Furthermore, this will enable them to deepen their understanding of the world around them.

My Project

In a nutshell, students will learn about the social, political, and economic structure of Ancient Greece. They will not only make the connections to the mythical stories read in their Language Arts class, but they will also learn about the legacies that this civilization has left behind that has impacted us today. The poster boards, class set of colored pencils and markers will enable them to create magnificent projects that will showcase their understanding of the Ancient Greek civilization. Additionally, I will use the colored pencils in my Language Arts class during Writer's Workshop for color mapping. My students benefit from color coding and charting their drafts because it allows them to understand formatting and structure. Furthermore, the class set of items can be used all throughout the school year to work on similar projects and assignments.

The essential understanding that students are taking away from this lesson is learning about the significance of the ancient Greek civilization and how our lives today are impacted by this great civilization.

Students will make a connection to the past by learning about the legacies this civilization left behind that have impacted our society today. They will learn about the contributions of this civilization and use this knowledge to deepen their understanding about the world around them.
