My Students

Math time is boring just using a book! I want my children to understand the math concepts thoroughly. Using manipulatives and skill reinforcing games help make the abstract skills they learn more concrete.

We are in a very low socioeconomic area.

Our school is a Title-1 school and 99% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Ethnically, I have a good mix: 6 African American, 6 Hispanics, 3 Native Americans, and 5 Caucasians. Many, if not most of these kids have lived through more than we can imagine. I have 2 students that are considered homeless, 2 foster children. As you may have guessed, many have learning disorders, ADHD, and behavior problems."

My Project

My students have learned so much this year! They have made leaps and bounds, but many students still have holes in their math education. For example: they can do multiplication and division, but they cannot subtract. I can not stop teaching fourth grade skills and focus on these second grade skills. The only way I can close those gaps is with one-on-one instruction. I plan to make weekly or bi-weekly centers with the games requested, giving me an opportunity to work one-on-one with struggling students. This should help close the gaps so they can be prepared for fifth grade.

Regardless of my students' home life, many have high aspirations in life; one wants to go to Harvard, another a vet, yet another an engineer.

I'm doing everything in my power to not only help them keep dreaming, but also to make their dreams become reality. Please help me help these children; we may be all they have.
