My Students

I've found through teaching a wide range of students, but particularly working class kids that if hooked to engaging poetry, poetry can change their mindset towards reading and writing. Nikki Grimes has written a book of poetry with real yet complex characters with simple everyday stories.

I teach three distinct classes: honors, exceptional children (with learning disabilities) and "regular" students.

I teach in a decidedly multiracial, multicultural school that reflects a good microcosm of present day America. Unfortunately, a dominant thread that connects them often is a disdain for reading. When I find a book or article that they find engaging I'm ecstatic. They were inspired by just snippets of the realism Nikki Grimes' Bronx Masquerade. When they connect I listen attentively. They've urged me on to get a class set of texts, so here I am asking.

My Project

I humbly call what I do with poetry and figurative language the demystification of poetry. To whatever extent I can change a mindset or shift a paradigm I'm on it. I envision my students performing, writing, and reciting poetry, making it come alive. I also plan to use the text to demonstrate character analysis, as the characters in the text change so dynamically during the course of the book. It makes the concept clear, concrete. It makes both teaching and learning fun.

In this atmosphere and environment of high stakes testing, we teachers really appreciate and savor opportunities to have strategic literary impact on our students.

The text I chose presents poetry is such a lively, readable, and often painfully realistic way of broaching areas of character education and tolerance far beyond the literary goals and intent I've set. Finding good written academic materials in a climate that is often anti-intellectual is is like tapping into a motherlode.
