My Students

Move into the 21st century! My school is way behind in this area. Our overhead projectors are old, outdated, and bulky to maneuver. This projector allows instant reflection of passages that are current and connect to my students' lives. It encourages this by allowing easy access to a needed tool.

I teach 7th graders in a low-income, high poverty area.

They are eager to learn, but often do not have access to the current resources to compete in a 21st century world. Magazines,newspapers, technology are not always a part of their every day world. The woes of our economy and violence often enter their worlds instead. Many lack much needed support from home and community. They move and change locations as a result of evictions. Their worlds are "uncertainty" and the next crisis takes priority in their lives. They do, however, show potential, desire, skills, and determination. Many are involved in extracurricular activities and demonstrate leadership qualities. My students see and want a better world for themselves and others. My school provides rigor and challenge so that they may have high expectations for themselves. Teachers at my school donate their own time and money to provide a safe and highly performing academic environment. Our diverse population demands creative success!

My Project

My students need to be exposed to various types of reading that relate to their lives and the world beyond. Having an easy resource such as the reflective overhead projector allows access to the right tool that can provide this experience. We also do a lot of double/entry journaling which can allow this activity to be conducted much more efficiently with this type of projector. There's no need for transparencies which demand time and money. I have seen these projectors used in workshops and other schools and am amazed at how much more learning can take place. Ink/Thinking is a highly effective and creative way to learn, and this projector allows the collaboration sometimes needed for this learning strategy. It sounds like a dream just to slip a piece of paper underneath it and there it is! The time it saves allows exposure to much more current and high interest reading and writing. Perhaps an overlooked & very positive outcome is a much more relaxed atmosphere. It is student friendly!

Low income, high poverty schools deserve the same needed resources as other schools.

Our goals of achievement and success for every student is the same;therefore, our materials should match our needs. Donations will make my classroom expand its learning capacity. They will be able to share more with their parents, siblings, and friends. Their self-confidence will swell which always has a tremendous rippling effect. It may just turn a non-learner,for whatever reason into a high achieving learner
