My Students

Do you remember your favorite part of the school day? For me, it was recess. It was the one time during the day when my friends and I could skip rope, chase each other, play kickball, or imagine we were pirates on our small playground equipment without worry. We made the most of our recess time.

I teach in a school that is very diverse.

We are a large elementary school serving more that nine different nationalities. Our student population is continually growing and changing. I have 25 active, energetic kindergarten students. They are a sweet, loving, curious group that work very well together. In the classroom and on the playground, I encourage them to stay busy. During recess, some like to run and chase each other while others enjoy riding on trikes and playing on the recess equipment. Like many their age, after a few minutes of one activity, they are one to something else. Before recess ends, some come to me with, "Is it time to go in yet?" and "Mrs. T., we're bored. What can we do now?"

My Project

The requested materials would give my students a variety of activities to engage in during recess that will keep them moving and busy. All of the things asked for will give students opportunities to strengthen muscles, refine large motor skills, and improve coordination. The activities will also allow my students to choose either independent play or teamwork. Students may need to share and take turns, which will improve social development. The materials would be kept in a storage area and taken out during our recess time. My assistant and I would be available to model the use of materials, manage materials, supervise a game, or actively participate.

Research has proven a growing epidemic of obesity among children.

With your help, my students will have plenty of physical activities to engage in during recess. Students will have many choices to keep them moving. With guidance, students will discover the many ways they can get up, play, and live an active lifestyle now and in the future. Please consider investing in this grant. My students will think you have given them things to play with now. We know it will impact their future.
