My Students

Currently, my students think an easel is an old, rickety, wooden monstrosity, that only exists to make their lives miserable. We have about 5 extremely large wooden easels in my classroom to serve each class. They are falling apart and are broken in more than one place.

I teach art to about 150 students each school year at a very small, rural high school in South Carolina.

Each class is fairly mixed with ninth through twelfth grade students. They are all extremely talented and capable. They love to try new hands on things. One thing they keep begging me to help them with is painting on canvas and using an easel like they see real artists use in movies, and on TV.

My Project

I am requesting twenty sturdy metal easels for my students to use in class. I know that there will not be room to use them constantly but I have a lesson planned that would involve them standing exclusively at their easel and painting their little hearts out! I also plan to use them in our auditorium for life drawings on paper. We will use a real living model and learn to accurately draw the human body. It is best to do this while standing and in this environment so that they can move around and compare proportions to their own.

Please picture in your minds a room full of Picasso's and Rembrandt's standing proudly at their station painting a still life.

These easels will be used over and over again for future students and in future projects. They will be great displays for artwork in our annual art show and my students will finally see that not all easels are out to get them.
