My Students

Comprehension is essential to reading but difficult to teach and learn. My students struggle with these abstract concepts but being able to practice them in fun and engaging ways is the key to success!

I teach at a rural school in NC.

I have a class of 18 eager and excited students, 3 of whom have special needs. Our school has 600 students with 90% receiving free or reduced lunch. Our class loves reading, yet we struggle with applying comprehension strategies. They love independent and partner centers and chances to talk about what they have learned. These comprehension centers and teaching aids will allow this.

My Project

We need fun, exciting, and differentiated reading centers to explore essential comprehension strategies in fiction and non-fiction, on various reading levels. Using these comprehension centers will allow my students to apply the strategies that are taught in concrete and different ways. These centers will also give students the social aspect of talk that is essential in learning. I will be able to use these comprehension centers to differentiate my teaching and delve deeper into the strategies that are only touched upon in my reading basal. However, the most important part is that they make learning fun! Being able to hook my students on fun and interesting activities is they key to their success in reading. By using these centers, I can make sure students are practicing and refining necessary comprehension skills that will make them thoughtful readers!

By providing support for this project, you will allow my students, and those in my future classes, the opportunity to become readers who are thinkers.

By practicing these comprehension skills daily they become ingrained and part of their reader's bag of tricks. This will allow them to be productive, thoughtful readers and thinkers!
