My Students

The challenge facing 21st Century learners is the ability to develop a sense of the world around them. Many American students are further challenged to appreciate the struggles of people they do not know. These books will enable my students to connect to young people like them from a world away.

My students hail from a variety of diverse backgrounds.

Many of them have never heard of the places mentioned in the books I want to expose them to. Our school is on in the first stages of Title I assignment and funds for special projects is limited. Couple our designation as a possible Title I school with serious budget shortfalls in North Carolina in general and in Mecklenburg County in particular, and my students are being educated in an economically disadvantage environment. These books will provide an opportunity for them to learn about other young people in the world. They will also be able to develop a deep level of appreciation for the struggles people face as compared to the struggles they face. As Americans, we often forget how fortunate we are even when we live in economically disadvantaged neighbors. Many of my students live in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. As they read these books, they will see the importance of determination and hard work.

My Project

Very seldom do students from America's ethnically and economically diverse neighborhoods get the chance to learn about the experiences of people a world away from their own. Reading these books of survival against the odds will be life changing because each of these books depicts a life that should have ended given the circumstances each person found themselves in. My students face tremendous social challenges. Each person in these books faced challenges my students could not imagine. By reading their stories, the message of survival will resonate and show my students how important it is to have unwavering confidence and a sense that anything is possible in their lives. It is my hope as my students read these books and learn about the lives of each person, they will develop a strong sense of the read possibilities life can have, even when what they see in front of them does not look positive. They will be able to see themselves as achieving anything despite the odds they face.

Students often learn about one form of genocide in the world.

This project will open their eyes to modern forms of genocide and its impact on those involved. This project has the potential to spark within my students a deeper level of empathy and perhaps a desire to reach beyond the borders of their community. Donating to this project will enlighten my students to the world around them and help them become members of a global society even if they cannot travel.
