My Students

Did you ever have laryngitis and were not able to communicate what you wanted and needed? Think about how frustrating that was. The students in my classroom have autism and struggle with communication every day. If we had digital cameras, my students would be able to take pictures of what they want!

I have six students, 5 boys and 1 girl, in my class with autism, ages 9-13.

Three of my students are nonverbal and use communication devices to speak. All six of my students struggle with communicating their wants and needs and get frustrated easily because of this. With 7 digital cameras, my students would be able to take pictures of 'our world' to communicate what they want and need in 'their world.'

My Project

Children with autism see and interpret things differently than an average person and a digital camera would help my students to bring their abstract sight into concrete vision through the use of pictures! Digital cameras would also open many doors for many other activities. We can go on picture walks in our community!!

One out of every 94 children in New Jersey have autism.

By helping these six children with autism, you are helping make a difference in fighting the mystery! Please give these children a tool to communicate and help us, as educators, learn how to turn their abstract thinking and seeing into concrete visions and words!
