Moving From TEXT to TECH: Reading with Technology

My Students

"Ms. Johnson, look at this book. It's missing 41 pages...how am I supposed to read this?" "Don't judge a book by it's cover," I tell them. However, I know that the appearance of old worn paperback books immediately makes my struggling readers hate reading even more.

The majority of my 7th grade students are struggling readers who live in low income communities.

Our school is one of the lowest performing schools in our district. While our class sizes are large, the resources available to us are not as abundant. Many of my students are reading and/or comprehending at levels averaging between the first and fifth grade. Our goal for this year was for every student to increase their reading stamina and overall reading grade level by the end of the year. Because of this, every day, the students read various novels of their own interests independently for 25-30 minutes. Initially, they were eager to keep track of the number of books they completed each week. However, as the year progressed, I noticed that the excitement and motivation to read was replaced with dread and apathy. The book selection was not very attractive: 15 year old novels, wrinkled and torn covers, taped up, missing or discolored pages, or entire books falling apart at the seams.

My Project

The Nook eReader from Barnes & Noble is an electronic reading device that allows users to access and store up to 1,500 electronic versions of books, newspapers, and magazines, many of which are FREE to Nook owners. The world that we live in is steadily becoming more and more technologically advanced; it is imperative that students, especially those growing up in low income areas, are exposed to and have the same opportunities to learn using technology as their peers in higher income areas of our district. How will these 5 Nook eReaders potentially benefit my students? They could: 1) provide instant access to various forms of literature that can be saved and accessed in the future 2) serve as an incentive to motivate struggling readers 3) improve reading fluency by allowing struggling readers to listen to a text while reading 4) expose students to new and advanced technology they would not normally have access to, and 5) reduce the amount of books lost or damaged from constant use.

Booker T.

Washington once said, "The surest way to lift oneself up is to help lift someone else up." Your contributions to this project can lift my students to a new level of learning. In a school where overhead transparencies and dim lights put students to sleep, this resource will awaken them to new experiences and new knowledge. These students deserve to learn with new technology just as much as their peers who happen to live in better neighborhoods. Your contribution CAN lift us! Thank you!
