My Students

Eagle Academy for Young Men at Ocean Hill is nestled between several neighborhoods in Brooklyn that are notorious for their high crime rates, and bleak, low performing schools. On average, our boys have entered our new all boys' school, two years behind in their reading grade level.

During the planning of the school, low reading levels were anticipated and as a result the teachers have incorporated a humanities based approach to the curriculum.

Scholars read literature, often times abridged versions of classical literature, that relate to what they are learning in their history class. This promotes high levels of critical thinking which elevates the discourse in both the English and History classes. However the humanities approach has also engaged scholars and helped maintain a high level of interest in the subject matter as well as their reading ability. One unforeseen additional benefit has been that our Eagle Scholars have begun to see the value in reading and education on the whole. Our boys have begun to view themselves as academics that are capable of making connections between themselves, their work, and their surrounding world as indicated in a New York Times article written about our boys and our new school.

My Project

To help continue our boys’ new found passion for reading and their pursuit to improve their reading levels, the teachers have collaborated in order to come up with a solution. We want to establish an independent reading club whereby students read books at home and engage in discussions about these books during a designated time in class. In keeping with our humanities curriculum and our future plans for the school, we want to have the scholars read marvel illustrated versions of classical texts. Interestingly enough, the scholars themselves have been asking for these illustrated classic novels. Continuing to engage these young readers will keep them academically competitive and continue to foster an intellectual pride.

With your help we can capitalize on our Eagle Scholars’ willingness to continue reading.

We would love to receive donated books from the marvel illustrated serious. Formal research as well as our empirical research has proved that these types of books not only engage young male readers but also more importantly truly help them improve. With your help these young boys can improve their reading which will help-set them on a path to becoming globally conscious and globally competitive young men.
