My Students

Our Wisconsin school district has a growing reputation as the place to bring students with special needs. We also have Hmong, Hispanic, and Kurdish populations, presenting both opportunities and challenges to me as a teacher. To top it off, fewer and fewer students enjoy school.

Our influx of students does not come with additional funds to help meet their educational needs.

In fact, with record state budget cuts, our resources continue to dwindle. What we lack financially we make up for in innovation, but with another $5 million budget cut ahead of us, my district's technology budget disappeared (literally-they cut the entire $850,000 technology fund from the budget).

My Project

A netbook would allow me to loop students into a wireless network, where they can use Google Docs to create and store the work they do for class. I have managed to install a wireless access point in my room, but until I get computers that are wireless capable, it has little purpose in my room. My students need to be ready for the 21st-century technology that awaits them after graduation; however, my students function in a technological void due to recent budget cuts. Since the district made the decision to eliminate the entire technology budget, they simply cannot fund computers like these to help my students.

This project will help make a difference in my students lives by bringing them into the modern age of technology and get them prepared for college.
