Today's journalists are on-the-go and everywhere. Reporting has become immediate through the use of blogging and posting to social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. Our students need to tools to develop the skills to be 'right now' reporters.
Our school is a comprehensive high school in a high needs urban district.
Despite the tough economic times, our student journalists still strive to be their best by producing a high quality monthly newspaper that is shared with our larger community; the newspaper is one of our school's shining stars in difficult budget times. Our ethnically diverse staff represents the rainbow of diverse groups on our campus. Students are ready and willing to learn the skills needed to take their reporting into the 21st century. Now they need the tools!
My Project
Once upon a time, reporters and photographers covered their assignments then headed back to the newsroom and the darkroom to process their stories. Today's journalists cover the news on the spot and report immediately through social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Flickr. A netbook will allow reporters out in the field to process their stories quickly and easily for upload to our soon-to-be live news website and Facebook. Photojournalists will be able to cover an event, then head to the nearest wi-fi hotspot and upload images to satisfy a news-hungry audience.
Your generous donation will help our student reporters develop 21st century journalism skills by allowing them to do up-to-the minute reporting of school and community events.
They will develop critical thinking and analysis skills as they decide what is reported immediately and what is saved for longer form stories, thus making them more marketable in the future.
