My Students

Well, it's all Greek to them and here's a chance for YOU to help my students to better understand.

My students are all in special education classes in the 8th grade.

We live in a remote, rural area in northeast Georgia. As a defense mechanism, my students claim to hate reading. The reality of it is that they really struggle with reading and have been forced to read selections over the years which are quite simply, boring.

My Project

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief presents the perfect opportunity to not only hook reluctant readers with the promise of an action packed novel, but also to teach students about Greek mythology. Oh-My-Gods! mythlopedia is the perfect companion for The Lightning Thief novel in that it is the" Who's Who" of Greek mythology and is presented in a graphic format with eye catching cartoons which take a sometimes confusing subject matter and turn it kid friendly. My students will be able to read a very popular novel like their regular education peers as well as gain a better understanding of the Greek mythology to which is alluded throughout the novel.

Reading is the keystone for success and by donating to this project, you will help students not only improve their weak reading skills, but also help students understand that not all books are "boring" as well as learn some mythology without them even realizing that they are learning.
