Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our budding digital photographers are looking to broaden their graphic design perspective. The students in our graphic art classes need an SLR digital camera to support their Photo Shop projects. They see that their inexpensive cameras do not give them the quality visual results they want.

My students are struggling with low-income one-parent family situations in a crime-infested environment.

Some are able to afford cameras, but they are learning that professional photographers use better lenses. If they could have access to a better camera, they would be able to produce better quality photos for the yearbook and other assignments for high school. They see the district photographer taking photo shoots with his camera for the district newsletter and they want to cover local events to submit their photos also for publication in the newsletter. Since our academy focus is environmental science, the students will use the camera to document green projects that we currently are working on.

My Project

The digital SLR camera that we need has a zoom lens from 18-55mm which is far superior to the small pocket cameras that some students have. The graphic art students will use the SLR camera on field trips to environmental centers and local businesses which have green design such as solar, wind and hydroelectric power. At our academy, teachers tailor lesson plans to fit an earth and space science theme. We use interdisciplinary instruction in graphic art, combining projects that relate to our theme. The camera will be loaned to responsible students to capture images that will be utilized by all the teachers at the academy to promote our field of education in our urban location.

Obtaining an SLR camera will make a difference not only in my graphic art classes, but for photos for the new school website, the yearbook, and extracurricular activities.

Students will learn how to use a professional camera and it will give them the confidence as graphic artists, how to visualize great things. This project could influence them forever because by seeing life through a different lens, they could rise out of poverty to "reach the stars" which is our school motto.
