My Students

A mind is a terrible thing to waste! Fifth graders can be "lazy" but when guided they can they live up to almost any challenge. I want to give my students chances to be challenged and to be successful.

I have a lot of minority students in my class.

Most of my students live in poverty level homes with parents who try but just don't have the means to give their children the experiences and guidance they need to rise to their potential and beyond. We are a rural school district in a sparsely populated county in North Carolina.

My Project

Most of my class is low academically but they benefit greatly from brain challenges. I teach my students about their minds and love to do logic problems and brain stimulating games with them. What I am asking for is 3 sets of partner games to stimulate my student's minds. Chess is a wonderful game to teach children about strategies. Blink is a fast moving card game where children have to match cards by one of four attributes. (If you Blink you miss a play it goes so fast.) Mastermind is a game that involves refining your thinking over and over to figure out a four color pattern created by your partner. I'm also asking for a book that is full of logic games. Tournaments and adult challenges will also be part of this project. Student learning will be immense with these games. You can't play them without A LOT of concentration, strategical thinking and logic - skills students with don't get much practice with considering their usual free choice activities.

Your help in funding this project will greatly improve the thinking skills of my students this year and for many more years to come.

I believe projects like this one where students are "forced" to become better thinkers will greatly affect our future. After all, today's students are our future workforce. I want to help them rise to the top with your help. Thank you for considering this project!
