Airplanes, pilots, hang gliders, and hot air balloons are on the way to our school for a month-long aviation celebration. We have no books in my classroom to support this study, but I want to increase my students' knowledge about flying machines and the people who dared to fly.
My first grade students are excited about learning.
Our school serves an urban population of diverse socio-economic and ethnic families. I have a majority of boys in my class and often some subjects don't appeal to them, but when you mention airplanes, their eyes light up with excitement...but, I want my girls to know that aviation is not a just a "boy thing" and that women have made great contributions to the aviation field, too. Funding is very limited, but our PTA is generously sponsoring Aviation Month for our school and many people have volunteered to help.
My Project
What better way to introduce students to flying machines than to bring airplanes, hot air balloons, hang gliders, helicopters, and the people who fly them to our school? Our P.T.A. is bringing demonstrations of aviation related equipment and the people who fly them to our school. The problem is that we have no books in my classroom that will provide my students with information about the Wright Brothers, Amelia Earhart, or other aviation pioneers. In fact, we do not have books about planes, balloons, or other flying equipment either. During this study, not only will we meet the aviators, but we will experience an airplane flyover, watch a balloon inflate and lift off, see a helicopter up close, and even try a hang glider on for size. We will make our own paper airplanes and see who can design the highest flying and longest flying plane.
Your donation will enrich the Aviation Month experience for my students.
They need more than just demonstrations. They need to learn about the people responsible for the flying inventions, the pioneering spirit that led to their success, and the importance of aviation in our world today. Please help my students explore the possibilities...they believe they can fly! Believe in them, too.
