Math Peer Tutoring Program Needs Calculators and Supplies

My students need 6 scientific calculators, 2 graphing calculators, pencils, graph paper, and an electric pencil sharpener for the after school Math Peer Tutoring program.

My Students

Our inner-city high school is in one of the top large public high schools in the metropolitan area and serves a diverse group of students from all around the city. While our students are ambitious and high achieving, many of them can’t afford some of the resources that more affluent students can.

The math peer tutoring program pairs high achieving student tutors with their classmates in a dynamic and very popular after school community service activity to help those in need complete homework and prepare for tests.

Up to 50 students per day take advantage of this program and the tutors themselves benefit greatly by earning community service credits and attaining impressive experiences that will serve them well at college and beyond. While our students are worldly and highly motivated, they need additional resources beyond what tight education budgets will allow. Our math and science oriented school has sent many graduates to some of the finest colleges across the country, and we have traditionally had affiliations with corporate sponsors that have provided valuable internships and awareness programs for our students. At this time, we are hoping to improve our inventory of supplies for the math peer tutoring program through donations to Donors Choose.

My Project

Presently, the Math Peer Tutoring Program, though highly successful, is woefully lacking in necessary supplies. We have a dedicated large and comfortable space for the program, as well as textbooks in all of the major subject areas, but because of the fact that this activity is not directly funded by the school budget, we are very limited in supplies. Many of our neediest students do not have calculators or graph paper, and thus have a difficult time completing assignments. Therefore, we are asking for contributions in order to purchase additional calculators (both scientific and graphing), as well as boxes of pencils, graph paper, and an electric pencil sharpener.

Our project is so important because the students we serve in Math Peer Tutoring are highly self motivated, evidenced by the fact that they come to this program voluntarily, and truly need the help that they are getting through the program to fully achieve their potential.

Many of the regular tutees in our program have seen their grades skyrocket by participating with their peers in this comfortable pressure free environment, but they need YOUR help with the additional supplies we have requested.
