My Students

Homebound students have a daunting challenge to overcome. They're in what is designated as the "most restrictive environment". They're socially deprived of the healthy interaction at a school. They are expected to meet educational goals within 1-2 hrs per day while those at school have a full day.

Homebound teachers are blessed with a rich variety of students.

They come from different backgrounds with different cultures. Their reasons for receiving instruction at home are equally as varied. Some are burdened with life-threatening diseases and their frail health precludes them from returning to school. Others are waiting placement for an appropriate setting, perhaps they’re delinquent or emotionally disturbed. The student population often includes autistic and brain damaged individuals, some who seemingly aren’t aware of the presence of a teacher. Intellectually they range from profoundly developmentally disabled to highly gifted. We’ve had national spelling bee winners and advanced placement high-achievers, along with severely dyslexic individuals struggling to read.On a 1-1 teaching situation the students are truly like shining stars, each with their own intensity. The different stages of maturity and emotional needs is apparent in this intimate setting. They're a joy to teach!

My Project

Al Gore had it right...computers are the tools of the 21st century. They can bring the world into the homebound student's bedrooms. But beyond that,we are requesting a computer that my population can use to supplement the teacher's computer. While I present a lesson in any area, my student may type notes on the computer you helped donate and save them in their personal file. The computer may be kept overnight with a responsible parent for a research project or to store a student's artwork, say with an electronic tablet pen,or view a DVD or an interactive CD. Further, the use of a router will enable both teacher and student to be connected to the Internet, even at the student's bedside.Often DSL or cable is connected to a desktop computer in a different room or at least away from my student's bed.The router will allow us to go wireless, where no signal or too weak a signal exists. With a signal stronger than we receive with dial-up,we can enjoy educational video and sophisticated learning games!

Websites,Cd's and DVDs abound to help my homebound population profit by the use of computers. My students and I watched Professor Randy Pausch's last lecture on the value of living life to the fullest, even as he was dying of cancer.

He turned us on to Storybook Alice and together my students and I learned how to create 3-D animation with their free download. I'd love to have my students developing their ideas working alone on their computer. Achieve 3000 is one of many programs used alone.
