Community Service Promotion

My students need a large LCD screen to promote our MANY community service projects using video, audio and text generated by us to share within our school and our community.

My Students

EAST Students are heavily immersed in using technology and good ole hard work to do a wide variety of community service based projects. We are having a HUGE impact in our school and in our local community. We want to share our work with other students in our school and at conferences.

We live in an extremely rural, high poverty area where there are few diversions for students outside of the school environment.

Our students in the EAST program are in grades 9-12 and they are very dedicated to the idea that helping make a community better through service projects, makes us a stronger society. EAST kids are from every group in the school, making social/economic barriers irrelevant. Sharing common goals and relying on one another to make projects happen have helped erase the walls that sometimes divide students. We use leadership, problem solving, community service, technology applications, self-directed learning and teamwork to get things done. The skill sets that students utilize in EAST are the same that they will need to be successful in post-secondary education and most every career path. These include technical, creative, organizational and soft skills that are so often mentioned in discussions on 21st Century education.

My Project

This year we have worked on drafting blueprints for a new animal shelter for our county, Census 2010, city beautification with our local Master Gardner's group, services to the elderly, GPS of bus routes, an anti-drug and smoking campaign, and we are preparing to participate in Relay for Life and do a public service announcement video on protecting our local water quality. This sounds like a lot, and it is! Some of these projects have been made possible through our classroom resources, through small grants and some people simply caring enough to volunteer to help. Have I said that these kids rock? So why do we need a large LCD screen? Not a whole lot of people know what we are doing, even within our own school. EAST kids stay BUSY! We would like to mount the screen in our hallway to share rotating video promos with other students and visitors during the school day. During special school events, visitors can view our projects. During conferences, we can show our work.

Part of leadership is being an example for others and we want to share our work with as many people as possible.

Helping build student leadership capacity can have a snowball effect, affecting more students in our school. We are a community of generational poverty, but are making strides to change this. Please help us promote community service work by donating to enable us to share what we do with our fellow students, visitors, community members and conference attendees.
