My Students

Ever heard of competitive reading?! Yes, there is such a thing and it's called the Reading Bowl. Budget cuts have all but eliminated funding for the library and our Reading Bowl team needs copies of next season's books to begin preparing for competitions early next school year.

Reading Bowl team members have two things in common--they love to read and they have a competitive streak!

My students attend a high poverty high school and most could never afford to buy copies of these books on their own. Although all 10 of this year's team members were girls, these ladies represent many ethnicities, cultures, religions, and countries of the world. Some are stellar students while others struggle, but the Reading Bowl team has become a steady source of friendship, academic support and ever-expanding world views.

My Project

Each year Georgia students at every grade level compete in the Reading Bowl. High school teams read a set of 20 novels that are selected based on their interest and relevancy to teens, the quality of their writing, and their ability to expand students' world views. Teams then pit their knowledge of these books against that of other teams; it's like a trivia competition based on these books! Through this competition, team members become careful, attentive, and analytical readers. As part of our practices, we discuss each novel as a book club and through this practice we learn more about the books and each other. Team members also create most of the practice questions that we use when conducting mock competitions. This task hones their skills at determining main ideas, following plots, and analyzing characters. These skills aid them in all subject areas. Teammates often tutor each other in problem subjects and their friendships extend beyond the team.

In addition to the academic benefits of learning to be an analytical reader, this team brings together students who probably wouldn't meet otherwise.

These kids have different religions, cultures, socioeconomic levels, home environments, and academic achievement levels, but their love of reading brings them together and gives them an opportunity to meet people outside of their normal circles. Team members learn about the world not only through the books they read on the team but from each other.
